Modern/Postmodern

Beat the Whites with The Red Wedge El Lissitsky - Modern
  • The colours used in this poster are typical of the modernist era - they engage the viewer with their intensity and compliment the strong and aggressive shapes being used, particularly the red used in the triangle, which symbolises the aggression of the bolsheviks.
  • Strong geometric shapes, and straight and diagonal lines also feature strongly in both this and in much modernist design. In this poster, they are representational - the intruding triangle symbolises the bolsheviks invading and defeating the white movement, who were their opponents during the Russian Civil War.
  • The typeface used is Sans Serif, and follows the rule of anti ornamentation and simplicity in this era of design. It is not there to decorate the poster, it is there to provide information, which also displays another feature of Modernist design - function first.

Keep Britain Tidy Judy Blame - Post Modern
  • Uses wit and homage, referencing the iconic symbol of Keep Britain Tidy on the T-shirt, replacing the trash with the nazi symbol, which signifies prejudice and racism.
  • The use of the iconic symbol also employs irony, because it is meant to be homely and retro, referencing a time when racism was style rife in culture, but placing it on the t shirt of the black model places it in a new context, promoting the opposite views of that era.
