What is Good? Wreck it Ralph Promotional Material

This is such a good example of engaging contemporary marketing. It's a fun and unusual idea that has been executed amazingly, and it's also interactive to encourage active participation from the public, as opposed to them simply viewing a poster. Instead, Disney created an experience.
Although the intended audience for the Wreck it Ralph release is likely to be larger than that for Arrested Development, this kind of campaign is amazing for creating interest and a buzz about a film or any kind of media product, and is definitely inspirational.
The whole campaign is incredibly clever, particularly the use of augmented reality technology to turn an actual building into a smart phone game. Having it concentrated into one small part of London, especially a part that is seen as quite cool and youthful, also helps to generate interest by making it seem exclusive, and a destination to be visited almost as if it was an event.

Collaborative Practice: Research into Envelopes

As well as creating the cards, we are required by the brief to consider the design of the envelope as well. Above are examples of lovely looking or creative envelopes that would be appropriate for our UK Greetings Card brief. The printed processes and the patterns/designs on the envelopes are the most obvious factor that make all of these desirable and successful, but it would interesting to explore the actual format of the envelope.
This love heart envelope is probably the best example of a relevant format to our designs, as our brief is based on Northern Romance.

What is Good? Research into Promotional Design

Arrested Development is the 'good' that I want to work with in this brief. In the last couple of sessions we have been required to bring in printed examples of the work we would like to create, however, this has restricted me a lot because I want to work on a larger scale, producing products that are more concept driven, and therefore not really very achievable in a studio environment. My main focus is on retail and promotion, especially ambient advertising, with a secondary focus on product and packaging. Both of these suit my brief the most, because Netflix, the online TV and Film streaming service is releasing a new season of Arrested Development in the near future, and so it makes sense that I would be creating some form of advertising for it. I would like to create a really clever advertising campaign to reflect the spirit of the show, but also some products that will need packaging to distribute as part of the campaign. A publication may also be appropriate as a piece of fan memorabilia, but I do not want to create one simply for the sake of it.

I have been using Pinterest and Online sources to find some inspirational and creative examples of promotion and marketing.

Collaborative Practice: Humorous Cards Research

I decided to research into funny cards that were related to romantic relationships, to look at how these cards are styled, and what type of humour they are using. The lazy oaf ones that I have found are probably the closest to our idea in terms of the style of quote being written down, as it's funny, but you can still see the sense of warmth and sentimentality behind it. It plays down the romance whilst still being romantic, and avoiding the soppiness and schmaltz. My favourite ones are the I love you almost as much as... style of cards, for the reason that it plays the romance down, but you know that it's a joke so it still feels warm and loving, just in a bit of twisted way. This style of card is aimed at a similar market, although possibly a little younger, maybe teenage, in terms of the style being used. Lazy Oaf is also more of an alternative label than something like Paperchase, which is reflected in the cards also, but we will be creating something more commercial, using mainly hand rendered type.
The other cards were taken from Scribbler, but are a little more rude and may not be appealing to UK Greetings. These cards are also a little more blunt and risque, so we want to create a balance between the styles that I have researched here. I did look at the Paperchase site, but the cards being sold are more interested in different processes like laser cutting and foiling rather than a strong concept, so most of it wasn't relevant to the brief.

Collaborative Practice: Research into Cards

I have created a Pinterest board for cards, which has been useful for researching into interesting formats, finishes and processes.

Collaborative Practice: Research

Because our concept is based on Northern sayings, we wanted to source what people's ideas of the North and Northern dialect are. I found this via Amazon, which is a Northern translator/glossary from a book called 'The Northern Monkey Survival Guide.' The book has a similar sense of humour and tone of voice that we would like to employ in the cards.
