Lecture Notes - Modernism

  • The era of modernism can be seen as from around 1750-1960.
  •  It was a reaction to the industrialisation and modern technological advances.
  • Form follows Function. Modernist design, whether in architecture, graphics or in furniture, places the use of the product as the most important factor, favouring clean, geometric lines and shapes, bold colours, and bold, sans serif fonts.
  •  One of the most influential and radical art movements within modernist design was the Bauhaus, an art school set up by Walter Gropius in 1919-1930's. He taught that to add decoration to design would fail, because it would date and go out of fashion.
  •  Truth to materials.
  •  Ornament is crime.
